Individuals with nearsightedness have issues being able to see well at a distance and need glasses or contact lenses to do so. The eye that is nearsighted tends to be longer than the standard eye, and the cornea can sometimes be steeper. As a result, when light passes through that eye’s cornea and lens, the light is forced in front of the eye’s retina. This makes distant images blurry. There are many refractive surgery options available to correct almost all levels of nearsightedness.
Individuals with farsightedness tend to have issues reading up close—and this is a problem that often develops prior to 40 years of age. The farsighted eye tends to be a bit shorted than the standard eye, and its cornea is usually flatter. Therefore, the light of distance objects focuses just behind the retina unless the lens is able to fully compensate. Near objects will require more focusing power in order to be clearly seen, and as a result, they will blur easily. Contact lenses, Refract Lens Exchange, and LASIK are just a few of the vision corrective options that are available to correct this eye condition.
The main problem with astigmatism is when there is asymmetric steepening of the natural lens or cornea, which results in light being focused unevenly. Individuals with untreated astigmatism, images often look shadowed or blurry. It is a very common condition, and it can accompany any form of refractive error. It can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, laser vision correction, corneal relaxing incisions, or special impact lenses.
Presbypoia is a certain type of condition that often becomes noticeable by individuals when they reach 45 years of age. For children and young adults, the lens easily focuses on near and distance objects. As an individual ages, however, the lens inside the eye tends to lose its overall ability to properly focus.
While this particular condition is not fully understand, it is believed that the lens and any of its supporting structures lose the ability to lengthen the lens during the close vision process. In order to compensate, affected people find that they are able to hold any material that they are reading a bit further away to help create a clearer image. Ultimately, reading glasses and similar aids are necessary by the mid-forties.
Aside from reading glasses, there are other ways to deal with presbyopia. Other treatment options may include multifocal and monovision contact lenses, monovision laser vision correction, and presbyopic implant lenses.
